Green Wave 2014- IDB Celebrations in India
The Green Wave 2014 Campaign on 22 May 2014 marking International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) received an overwhelming response in India. Green Wave is an initiative of UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Green Wave-India campaign promoted and popularized by Centre for Environment Education (CEE) received attention across all groups. Participation came from students, teachers, government institutions, NGO’s and business houses. The plantation activity was carried out in range of habitats like coasts, Western Ghats, Himalayas, arid and semi arid parts of the country.
The diversity of trees varied from deciduous to semi evergreen to evergreen trees such as Teak (Tectona grandis), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Pongamia (Millettia pinnata), Coconut (Cocos nucifera), Mango (Mangifera Indica) and Banayan (Ficus benghalensis) which have a range of uses from medicine to food were planted.
It was noteworthy to witness women self help groups in 4000 numbers participated from Tamil Nadu in the campaign planting about 1000 local tree saplings. On the whole more than 4000 diverse tree saplings have been planted on IDB.
